How often is MedLook updated?

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

Often, or as often as we can get a new build posted that will benefit even one customer. Sometimes we will post a couple of versions in the same week and then maybe not again for a couple of months. We strive to be responsive. We do not adhere to a philosophy of fixed released dates of six or twelve months.

How much do the updates cost?

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

Since Feb. 2005 we have not charged an update fee because we have intentionally kept MedLook at version 3.0. That means there was no charge for the NPI changes! Beat that with another vendor - I doubt anybody else can make the same claim. When MedLook 4.0 comes up there will be an update fee. It will be similar to updating QuickBooks or MS Office and will depend upon your support agreement.

How many users are there for MedLook and where are they located?

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

An exact number of users is unknown but our guess is roughly 2000 sites scattered all across the US. We’re still looking for the first site in Hawaii - we want to do on-site training!!!

What about training?

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

Rarely is on-site training necessary. The on-line videos are extremely beneficial. Webinars will also be available as per demand. One-on-one training can also be done remotely as required. In one to four hours every bit of the program can be covered.

How do I get the real version?

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

All installations of MedLook are the real program. The difference is simply in the licensing to unlock features.

Who Uses MedLook?

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

The past six to eight months has seen our website undergo a major transformation.  We have put a lot of effort into this redesign and continue to make changes to make our site more attractive to new users and functional for existing users seeking assistance.  A number of you have already taken advantage of the ease of connecting for remote assistance via our new Chat system.  It’s really the same as we had before but no longer requires a PIN number.  We hope you like it and continue to use it with discretion.

We currently have a section entitled “Who Uses MedLook?” available for our users.  This section benefits all users by providing a 24×7 presence that is more likely to be listed in a web search than your own corporate page.  Clients may be searching for a billing service, billing software, etc., and arrive on our site and peruse the “Who Uses MedLook?” section and find your listing.  If you would like to be included in this listing send us an email containing your business name, a short description of your services and what makes your business attractive, along with your contact information (phone, email, website).

If you are an end provider this may not be of any net benefit to you but we would be more than glad to list your company on our site.  We believe “Who Uses MedLook?” provides a much more reliable source of reference than a Testimonial listing.

Trivia Question:  What do Vatican City, Haiti, Costa Rica, and Grenada have in common?

The answer will be posted in the next blog entry.

Installing MedLook on a 64-bit Windows 7 system

Wednesday, January 13th, 2010

A number of people have asked if MedLook will work on a Windows 7 system.  Many users have already found out that it will - before me!  In a couple of cases though there was at least one problem.  I just got off the phone with a client that was trying to get setup on a 64-bit Windows 7 system.  The initial installation gave a “NewDBSelected…” error message when trying to open an existing database.

The good news is that to get the message means MedLook itself is running fine.  The bad news is that this means the Microsoft ODBC driver for Visual FoxPro is not installed correctly.  How can this happen?  The VFP ODBC driver installs very quickly and virtually never fails.  It is part of the “first time” installation procedure of any MedLook deployment. However, on 64-bit Windows 7 systems it will not work correctly unless it is installed using the Windows Compatibility helper.

Since you may or may not have this problem it is easiest to assume the best (i.e. that the installation will complete with no problems).  If you find that you get the NewDBSelected… message then fix the problem.  Here’s how to fix it.

First, remove the existing installation of the VFP ODBC driver.  This can be done through the Add/Remove Programs icon of the Control Panel (go to Start and then Control Panel).  You will see Visual FoxPro ODBC Driver near the bottom of the list of programs.  Uninstall it.

To install it properly, download it to your computer from http://www.medlookusa.com/updates/VFPODBC.MSI. After it is downloaded do not run it directly or you will have the same problem as before.  Now open My Computer and browse to the location where you saved the file.  Right click on it and use the Compatibility option.  Let the computer do all of the work for you from this point forward.  In the case we just went through it looked as though it failed because after we filled in the questions that the installation program asks it implied at the last step that it couldn’t finish.  However, we tried MedLook and it worked just fine.

So if you encounter this particular problem you should know that others have gone down this path before you with success.  It’s just a minor, albeit frightening, glitch in the installation.  Can we expect anything less from a new operating system from Microsoft?

MedLook 3.0.145 Posted

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

A new version of MedLook 3.0 has been posted to our site.  This build includes a very small feature regarding box 25 of the CMS 1500 form.  In some rare cases (first time in many years) one carrier may require box 25 to use the SSN and all the rest require the EIN for any given provider.  While there are work-arounds for this using multiple providers it can get messy and confusing especially when a patient may have multiple carriers.  As a result we included an exception list (see the readme.txt file) to make this much easier to deal with.

The New Year is now fully upon us with much of the country being gripped by the excessive effects of global warming (and I’m joking - it’s cold as blazes in most places).  I sure hope the citrus crops in Florida don’t freeze - I love oranges and grapefruits.

I appreciate the many very kind emails and cards regarding the passing of my dad.  You guys are the best. I will do my best to continue to deliver a product that makes you competitive and productive.

Along those lines this is a good time to consider the MedLook Auto Posting solution for only $300.  If you find that you are posting a significant amount of payments the Auto Posting module will save you a lot of time.  In addition to making the postings it also records the reason for adjustments, etc., which is great for review later without having to dig up old paperwork.

I hope 2010 holds an abundance of pleasant surprises for each of us.
